Junior Hockey
The junior section is one of the most treasured parts of the club and plays a central role in shaping the future of hockey at Oxted. From the mixed under eight group through to the boys and girls squads at under ten, under twelve and under fourteen, the pathway gives young players a secure and enjoyable introduction to the sport. Sessions focus on building core skills, teamwork and confidence, ensuring that children develop at a pace that suits them while still feeling part of something bigger. By the time they reach under sixteen level many begin training and playing alongside senior squads, giving them early experience of the adult game and preparing them for future progression. This approach has already produced clear success, with several players rising all the way from the youngest teams into the first squads, and some going on to represent national age group teams.
Junior players take part in a variety of tournaments throughout the season against other local clubs, providing plenty of valuable match experience and a chance to enjoy competitive hockey in a fun and friendly setting. At the end of each season the section competes in the Surrey Cup and Plate events where Oxted traditionally performs extremely well. These results highlight the strength of the programme and the depth of talent that continues to move through the age groups.
Sunday mornings at Oxted School are the heartbeat of junior hockey. A committed team of volunteer coaches and managers create a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere where every player feels supported. Over the years the juniors also benefit from the involvement of current and former international players who have coached across the age groups, offering insight and inspiration that is invaluable at such a formative stage. Their presence shows young players what they can aim for if they stay dedicated and enjoy the journey. The combination of top level guidance, strong community spirit and a clear development pathway makes the junior section a very special part of the club and a source of pride for families, coaches and players alike.
