13.10.07 - Wessex Supervets Fixture Alliance - Havant Cavaliers 2, Oxted Vintage Moonshiners 2
Following the long journey down to Havant it was Oxted’s over 50s Vintage Moonshiners who settled into the game earlier than their hosts. Oxted were determined to do better than last season when they were trounced 6-1 by the Cavaliers. This determination was evident from the first minute with newcomer Field looking very lively on the right wing. With only 3 minutes on the clock Oxted were awarded their first penalty corner, which Hunnam dispatched expertly to give Oxted an early lead. Although Oxted’s forwards Hawthorn, Hunnam and Field together with the midfield of Mears, Walsh and Bird kept up the pressure, Havant began to look increasingly dangerous. Following a penalty corner they equalised with a soft goal in the 8th minute. The game was evenly balanced now although the more clear cut chances fell to Havant but luck and dogged defending by Belton, Armstrong, Riley and Macklin enabled Oxted to take a well earned draw into half-time.
The second half started with Havant imposing their superior skill by playing controlled possession hockey and posing problems for Oxted keeper Tory and his defence. However, they were unable to convert this into goals and it was Oxted who against the run of play took the lead in the 62nd minute following a well worked move involving a number of passes. The ball came to Bird on the edge of the circle and his powerful shot was deflected into the Havant goal. Earlier Hunnam was unlucky not to score when he marginally missed an open goal. Havant now threw everything at Oxted but it was only some sloppy tackling in the dying seconds of the match, which enabled Havant to score the equaliser from a short corner. Oxted had to be satisfied with a draw but a win was definitely on the cards.
Team: Tory, Armstrong, Macklin, Belton, Riley, Bird, Mears, Walsh, Hawthorn, Hunnam, Field, Bridge.
