A Easter message from the Chairman....(17.3.08)
Dear All,
I cannot believe how this season has flown past, most of us just have a couple of games left :
Men`s 1`s : Currently in 4th place and should hold that with one win in their next two games.
Men`s 2`s : Have now removed any relegation doubts with a 1 – 0 win over Epsom last weekend.
Men`s 3`s : After a 3 – 3 draw on Saturday they are now in a position to win Surrey / Hants open regional league if they beat Richmond In their final league game on 29th March at home 2pm.
Men`s 4`s : Guaranteed 5th place, great to see a number of the Development boys coming into the team and performing with great merit.
Vet`s : Won the Sussex Vet`s league for the 2nd year in succession last weekend with a great 4 – 3 win over East Grinstead.
Vintage : Have won more games this season than for the last couple of years !
Ladies 1`s : Are in a cliffhanging situation at the top of Surrey Prem, they are currently in 1st place but level in points with Wayfarers and just one goal ahead on goal difference! Their final game is at home on April 5th @ 2pm.
Ladies 2`s : Have had some excellent results since Christmas which has lifted them to mid table.
Development : Currently 6th in the Sussex Development league with a very young side.
So obviously there are a couple of important games to come up so please tTry and support where you can. I`m sure if the 3`s win on the 29th there will be quite a party in the legion ! The 1`s also have a home fixture on that day.
Please remember the Dinner Dance on April 12th, tickets on sale now.
If anyone has any appropriate items for the auction they can donate please let me know.
Have a great Easter.
Mark

A (rather large) round up of the weekend's games....(13.2.08)
Starting with the ladies teams, the 1sts have won 3 of their last 4 games, only dropping points at home to Surbiton 2nds in a 3-3 draw. At the weekend they eased past Camberley and Farnborough 1sts 5-1 at home. This excellent form post-Christmas has left them a point off top position behind London Wayfarers (who coincidentally have the same goal difference) and 5 points clear of 3rd, demonstrating how tightly matched the top two sides in the division have been this year. The 2nds have started to pick up points, having won 2 and lost 2 in the past month, unfortunately the most recent of which was a 2-0 away loss at a strong Woking 2nds side.
There certainly wasn't a post-festive hangover for the Men's 1sts as they have picked up 7 points out of a possible 9 since the Christmas break, including a hard fought point away at a strong Indian Gymkhana side, and powerful victories over Bromley & Beckenham (2-1) and Teddington (5-0). This string of results has seen the side sitting in 5th comfortably above the relegation melee below and still challenging for honors. JK currently leads the scoring charts for the 1sts with 11, with Wayne Bennett and 2 goal hero Dom Flannery breathing down his neck.....a worthy mention for Neil Turk who despite claiming to lead the assists league is yet to register a solitary goal this season. Bless. Wayner does however top the secondary assist league with 2, and also holds the award for the most ridiculous flat-top Top Gun hair style to grace the National League since it's inception. The Men's 2nds have suffered indifferent form recently, having only picked up 5 points out of a possible 15. They have shown glimpses of form in patches, but now need to start to impose themselves more on teams if they aren't to drop league positions due to how tight the league is - 4 points separates 6 teams in mid-table (4th to 9th position). They now face some difficult games in the next 2 weeks with games against Holcombe and Havant to come. The 3rds are topping their league, and have recovered from a couple of losses to go two points clear. In the process they have beaten Old Georgians 9-0 and came out 3-2 winners in a close encounter with Wanderers. Despite only picking up 3 points from their final 6 games before Christmas, they 4ths have now won 4 straight games. This has seen them surge up the table and they are now fully involved in the fight for promotion as they currently sit 5th, 5 points off top. It's not only the 3rds who are sitting pretty at the top, as the Vets are now top of the Sussex Vets League having won their last 2 games 5-1, which leaves them 7 points clear of Lewes who sit 2nd in the table.
Recent results from the Juniors....(13.2.08)
Sunday 10 Feb
The U10’s and U12’s played Reigate Priory U12’s in a round robin tournament. Spring came early with the juniors playing in perfect sunshine. The scores were:
Oxted U10’s v Reigate Priory U12’s 1-1 (Sabin)
Oxted U12’s v Reigate Priory U12’s 1-0 (Jack)
Oxted U12’s v Oxted U10’s 2-1 (Sabin)
Oxted U10’s v Reigate Priory U12’s` 1-0 (Sabin)
Sunday 3 Feb
The U10’s played in the Purley Walcountians U11 festival and they did the club proud winning two and losing two in a tournament where our average age was two years younger than any of the teams we played against. In fact, the organisers commented on the performance of the U10’s saying they played the best hockey. In very cold conditions the results were:
L1-2 (Sabin)
L0-1
W1-0 (Wallace)
W1-0 (Rudd Jones)
The 2nd half of the season starts with a bang....(14.1.08)
Last Saturday saw an excellent set of results for the majority of the clubs sides, both in terms of the juniors and seniors. The more junior members of the club set an excellent precedent with some fine performances at the Sevenoaks Triangular Tournament (see Juniors/Match Reports for more details). The Development side decided that the East Grinstead Badgers wouldn't mind loosing two years in a row and duly dispatched them 2-0. With the Men's 1sts not playing for another couple of weeks the 2nds stepped up to the plate in what was a tight and well fought game against Holcombe 3rds, running out 6-4 winners - despite the colossal Wayne Bennett giving the visitors some late Christmas charity. The 3rds weren't to be out done dispatching of Wanderers 5-1 on what was pretty much an ice rink. The Vets continued their pre-xmas goal scoring form by beating Lewes 7-4, with Douty scoring 3, Forster grabbing a brace, and Wallace and Novell scoring once each. The Ladies 1sts made it 5 games on the bounce following up last week's 2-1 win over Reigate Priory with a 2-0 victory over Barnes Hounslow Ealing 2s. Unfortunately despite a spirited performance the Ladies 2s went down 5-3 to Camberley and Farnborough Ladies 2nds.
A round up of club's results from the weekend...(11.12.07)
Saturday 8th December saw a mix of results for the club. The vets followed last weeks 10-1 demolition of local rivals East Grinstead with a close yet convincing 3-1 away win at Eastbourne, with goals from McGhee x1 and Duncan x2. The Men's 2s continued their return to form with a less than convincing 2-1 victory over Trojans, following last weeks 5-1 victory over Epsom - Lee Dunn grabbing his first of the season alongside a 'Bummer Special' early doors to set up the victory. The result leaves them sitting 4th in South Open Premier - Division 1 going into the xmas break. The Men's 3s are now the form side in the club overcoming Richmond 7-1 with Terry Higgs duly grabbing himself a hat trick. Despite having a blinder for the first 6 games of the season, the following 3 games saw a down turn in fortunes for the 4s, luckily they stemmed the flow in a heated and rain soaked 0-0 with Old Georgians in a game masterfully officiated by Mikey Adamson.
The ladies 1s returned their recent run of excellent form overcoming Reigate Priory in a tightly contested 2-1 victory, making it four games on the bounce without dropping a point. The ladies 2s unfortunately have had a slightly more tricky time of late, continuing their recent run of poor form with a 3-1 defeat to Richmond.
Just a reminder going into the winter break that the club is always looking for new players, no matter what level or age, so if you're interested or you know someone who is, you'll be more than welcome to join us at a training session or contact Mark Sabin for further information (see contact page for details).
Weekend round-up...(13.11.07)
Last weekend saw a mix of results for the clubs sides. Starting with the ladies sides, the 1st XI drew 2-2 with Cheam, and unfortunatly the 2nd XI went down 4-1 against Old Kingstonians. On the Mens side the Vets drew 0-0 in a tight encounter with Chichester. The Mens 4s continued what is the best run of results in the club dispatching of Sunbury 4-1. The 3s demolished Barnes 5-1, and unfortunatly the 2s continued their patchy form going down 3-0 to league leaders Havant-managed and coached by former Oxted goal scoring machine/coach Calum Giles. The Mens 1s continued their recent good run of results against some tricky teams this time drawing 2-2 against Holcombe.
With immediate effect the club will now be using Oxted British Legion as it's social base...(22.10.07)
When we finish our games this coming Saturday ( 27th ) we will be returning to Oxted Legion for food, drinks etc (entry is at the front of the building).
This was a decision made unanimously by the club`s Steering committee, the main reasons were financial and logistical, and OBL are very pleased to host us. As an OHC member this entitles you to full use of OBL`s facilites so please enjoy using them and please use them in a responsible manner (I`m sure you all will).
For teams wanting to arrange socials they have an inhouse disco we can use and also facilites to hold a race night, so why not get the ball rolling and organise one!
OBL is situated opposite the Oxted Cricket Club entrance, If any of you are still unsure of the location check 'Club Info - How to Find us' in the above menu (details to be updated imminently!).
Success on the county scene for several youngsters from the club's junior section...(7.10.07)
Several of the club's junior players have been selected for the county championships: for Surrey under 13s squad - Fraser Kenny ( just 12) and James Foggin ( just 10). Also a mention for Tom Chatfield who was selected for the Surrey under 14s development squad. Congratulations to the three boys for getting selected, whilst a big thank you must go to all of the coaches who are involved on a Sunday with coaching and games.
Please see: www.activesurrey.com/content-2213 for more details.
Oxted 1sts lose after extra time in the H.A. Cup...(30.09.07)
Sunday saw an evenly contested match between the 1sts and Surbiton decided on penalty flicks after 1-1 at full-time and extra time, with unfortunatly the result going the way of the visitors. It took until the 5th penalty stroke for Surbiton to win the match, but the 1sts should be proud with the way they kept the National Prem side at bay for long periods of the game. On another day we would have seen Oxted in the next round of the draw, but a lot of positives will be taken from the game including 1st team debuts for Tragedy aka Lewis Hepburn and JK.
