Oxted Hockey Club Juniors 2008/09 Season....(12.09.08)

I hope you are all enjoying the summer break. At the risk of reminding you of cold wet Sunday mornings I thought it was about time I sent out an update on the plans for Junior hockey at Oxted this season.

Sunday morning coaching will restart at Oxted School on Sunday 7th September

Coaching times will be as last season with one change - the u14 and u16 girls group switching to the later slot:

  • 9.30 till 11 -all under 12s boys and girls (max age under 12 on 1st Sept ie up to school year 7)
  • 11 till 12.30 - under 14 and under 16 boys and girls
The change in times for the girls is to allow us to play in and host more triangular fixtures for the u12s, u10s and beginners groups and to make best use of pitch space.

Teams running next season:

Development Team - plays Saturday afternoons in the Sussex Development League (will be selected from boys aged 11 through to 16, plus 1or 2 adults);
Team managers: Graham Foggin / Murray Novell

Under 16 boys - will play friendlies against local clubs
Team manager: Murray Novell

Under 16 girls - will play in the Mercian Home Counties Girls League
Team manager: Keith Tarrier

Under 14 boys - will play in the Mercian under 14 development league
Team manager: Graham Foggin plus one other tbc

Under 12s/Under 10s/Beginners - Will play monthly triangulars - each club to host one age group
Team managers: Mark Sabin, Mark Wallace, Dan Macguire, Graham Foggin plus others tbc

Mark Wallace has put together a programme of triangulars for the 3 u12 teams and that will be circulated in due course. The aim this season is to play more games against other local clubs this season, whilst at the same time trying to keep travel to sensible distances

Coaching
This season in addition to the regular set of volunteer coaches we will again be running the rota which gets players from the clubs senior sides involved with coaching the juniors. We will also ensure regular attendance from professional, paid coaches to bring greater continuity from week to week.

Subs
Will be fixed at the same rates as the last two years - £50 for the season for u12s and £70 for the season for u14s/16s. Forms will be given out at the start of the season. Subs cover all Sunday coaching and Sunday games (26 sessions). The only additional charge is for any of the older juniors who play in senior teams and the boys playing in the Saturday development side where we charge £3 a game match fees to cover pitch hire, teas etc

Volunteers Please !!
As with all clubs we rely heavily on a small number of volunteers to run junior coaching and manage teams. We believe its vitally important that these roles are covered by people with good experience and knowledge of the game.
However there are always more than enough jobs to go round for any parents and non- hockey players who are able to help. In fact without your help we are sometimes limited as to what we can cover on any given weekend. If you are able to help with any of the following or have any other good ideas please could you let me know, together with your contact details.

  • Transport to games for the team your son/daughter plays in
  • Junior kit co-ordinator - we are planning to organise new kit for the junior section this season
  • Assistance with organising fixtures/ confirming player availability - sharing the admin load with the relevant team manager
  • First Aid Kits - making sure all kits are well stocked and held by each junior team manager
  • CRB checks - assist in co-ordinating full CRB coverage across all coaches and team managers
  • Website - match reports/ photos to the clubs webmaster
  • Clubmark - the club needs to renew its Clubmark registration - this is organised by the sports governing body to confirm we run a safe and well organised club. Its not difficult but involves a fair bit of paperwork !

Kit
As mentioned above we are looking to organise some new kit this season, so watch this space.

***And if you run your own company and fancy sponsoring the club generally or just sponsoring the juniors kit please get in touch - I have more details available***

In the meantime all we insist on is that children come dressed for sport in tracksuit and trainers. A stick is not essential - we have some spares. What are essential are shin pads and gumshield please - together they need not cost more £10 but are worth much more ! And please make sure that children bring them each week.

Schools Tournament
We are planning to organise a tournament towards the end of September where we would invite a number of local schools to send teams - details to follow....

The rest of the Club
The club is always looking for new players for both mens and ladies sides at all levels of ability. In addition to all the junior sides mentioned above we run 4 mens sides, 2 ladies teams, a veterans (over 40s) and a vintage team (over 50s). So if you fancy a run out or know someone who might then please let us know.
The Mens 1st XI will once again compete in the National League this season and are now just one step away from the Premier League, the highest level of hockey in the country. It really is worth trying to get down to some of the games if you can - find the fixtures at www.oxtedhockeyclub.com

Men`s 1`s : Finished a comfortable 4th place in National South leaving them in a very strong position to challenge for promotion next season.

Men`s 2`s : Finished a respectful 7th in their first season in Surrey Open Premier.

Men`s 3`s : Demolished all competition in the process of marching to the Hampshire & Surrey Open Regional League Championship.

Development : Finished 6th in the Sussex Development league with a very young side.
